AlvaradoSmith Remembers

Firm Founder Raymond G. Alvarado

It is with heartfelt sadness that the firm of AlvaradoSmith announces the passing of one of its founders and a long-standing, respected member of the legal community in Southern California, Raymond G. Alvarado.  Ray began practicing law in 1972 when he opened his first law firm that for many years was known as Alvarado, Rus & McClellan.  In 1993, Ray realized his dream of establishing a minority-owned law firm when he, along with Ruben Smith and two other partners, formed the firm now known as AlvaradoSmith, which remains the largest diversely-owned law firm based in California.  Throughout his years with AlvaradoSmith, Ray was passionately committed to the advancement of diverse firms in the legal community, as reflected by his extensive involvement with the California Minority Counsel Program.  In addition to his commitment to his profession, Ray gave tirelessly of himself to educational, civic, and youth organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club, youth sports, and high school moot court competitions,  Apart from his professional success, Ray was a well-recognized, contemporary artist whose paintings can be found throughout Orange County, including in the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Santa Ana.

AlvaradoSmith’s managing shareholder, Ruben Smith, expressed the sentiments of the entire firm in stating, “Our dear friend, colleague, and leader has passed from this world to another in Heaven.  He leaves behind an incredible legacy and dream that continues to inspire us.  We celebrate his life and career, and we cherish the memories of our time with him for he brought us laughter, generosity and compassion.  In recognition of his contributions to the community and, in particular, his commitment to higher education for our youth, AlvaradoSmith established the Raymond G. Alvarado Scholarship Fund.”
